NEW Bendigo Braves coach Ben Harvey couldn’t help but crack a cheeky grin as he watched his new import Ivan McFarlin shoot around at Bendigo Stadium yesterday.

Harvey’s been around the traps long enough to know that American imports often arrive in Australia a couple of inches shorter in height and less credentialed than what their player agent had described.

That’s not the case with McFarlin.

“He’s what we expected . . . and we couldn’t be happier to have him here,’’ Harvey said yesterday.

“We referenced Ivan pretty hard and he’s a very good person and he’s a very good player.

“He’s exactly the type of player we needed to fill out our roster.

“For a few years now the Braves have really struggled with rebounding and he’s that missing link.

“With Ivan and Ricky Daniels in the side we’re going to be a lot stronger when it comes to rebounding and that inside presence.’’

Few imports have arrived in Bendigo with better credentials than McFarlin.

He had a standout college career with Oklahoma State. He is one of only four Oklahoma State players to have racked up more than 1000 points, 700 rebounds and 100 blocks.

McFarlin then had a brief stint with Philadelphia in the NBA, before plying his trade in Europe.

The 27-year-old is looking forward to making an impact with the Braves.

“I love to play physical and be a team player,’’ McFarlin said.

“I run the floor and get on the boards and try and bring my teammates into the game.

“The only way I know how to play is at 100 per cent and I’ll be giving my all every game.’’
